To mark Refugee Week, the managing director of a Suffolk PR firm is urging other small companies to follow in her footsteps by employing a refugee.
Ukrainian refugee Lena Vasylevska joined the team at Prominent PR as an account executive in April having worked remotely across Europe after war broke out in her home country.
Lena has previously worked as a journalist as well as managing marketing departments in Ukraine.
Helen Rudd, Managing Director of Prominent PR, said: “Lena is a shining star in the office and we are delighted by how well she’s getting on.
“Lena has played an important role in a number of our client’s accounts and has built on her skills day after day.
“I would ask other small businesses in the county to consider employing refugees – there is a wealth of talent and expertise among them and many just need to be given a chance to shine.”
Lena has excelled in her position, taking on a key role in a variety of projects, including helping to publicise the incredible work being done by the region’s Strategic Migration Partnership and its Wellbeing and Work for Refugee Integration project (WW4RI).
This involved interviewing several refugees in Ukrainian and translating them into English.
Lena said: “I am really enjoying my time here at Prominent. They are a close-knit team and have made me feel so welcome.
“It is difficult coming to a new country to build a new life while such horrors are happening at home.
“But finding a job I love here in Suffolk has helped me feel part of the UK and the community here in Felixstowe.
“There are lots of refugees like myself who in our home countries had successful lives and careers but were forced to flee due to war.
“I think it is important for businesses in Suffolk to see there are lots of talented and skilled people wanting to work and to make their mark here in the UK.”
